The Houston Rockets are excited to add Kevin Durant’s three-point gravity to their offense. The developers at NBA 2K see the vision: Durant is one of two players with a 90+ overall three-point rating.
You read that correctly. If you follow the NBA, you can guess who’s joining him. Hint: his name rhymes with “fury”, or “hurry”, as in “hurry up and end this game, the Rockets are clearly going to lose”.
Steph Curry is rated 99 on 3s. Durant is rated 91. Nobody else received a rating above 90.
Is that accurate?
Rockets’ Kevin Durant is one of the league’s best shooters
There’s no question that Durant deserves his 90. In 2024-25, he hit 43.0% of his 6.0 attempts per game. There can be even less debate about Curry’s worthiness.
Should anyone else have received the honor?
That’s where the conversation gets interesting. In terms of combining volume and accuracy, the Bulls’ Zach LaVine set the standard last year. He hit 44.6% of his 7.2 attempts per contest.
Anthony Edwards deserves a nod as well. He connected on 39.5% of his whopping 10.3 attempts per game. Malik Beasley hit 41.6% of his 9.3 attempts per. Payton Pritchard knocked down 40.7% of his 7.8. Why aren’t these guys 90s?
The reasons vary. LaVine and Edwards haven’t been consistent enough. They’re presumably being taxed for less accurate seasons in the past. If they both hit similar numbers this year, we’ll talk.
Beasley and Pritchard can’t shoot over the same coverages as Durant and Curry. Durant’s height gives him an edge, where Curry is simply the best shooter ever - that’s why he’s 99.
So, this all feels fair enough. Durant deserves to be recognized as one of the two best shooters in the NBA.
What does it mean for the Rockets next year?
Rockets need a player like Kevin Durant
It means one of the worst shooting playoff teams in the NBA will improve on a weakness.
The Rockets coveted Durant for his shot-making more than his floor spacing. He’ll be their go-to guy down the stretch. Yet, his shooting will be invaluable as well. As defenses scramble to guard his jumper, opportunities will open up for their other players.
He’ll open the floor for Alperen Sengun and Amen Thompson. Durant's gravity could even help Tari Eason or Jabari Smith Jr. expand their offenses, or Reed Sheppard have a sophomore breakout. Durant shouldn’t be boiled down to his shooting, but there’s no understating how valuable that skill will be.
NBA 2K would seem to agree.
