Rockets must avoid Anthony Davis trap in latest Alperen Sengun trade speculation

Giannis Antetokounmpo, Kawhi Leonard, and Jaylen Brown are all multiple-time All-Stars who have been traded this offseason. Anthony Davis is now generating buzz as the next big name who could be on the move. Washington seems hesitant to move on from the 10-time All-Star, but that has not stopped media outlets from speculating that there could be a move on the horizon.

A recent Bleacher Report trade speculation piece suggested that the Houston Rockets could build a win-win offer for Anthony Davis. Unfortunately, the package would be a short-sighted move for the Rockets. Houston fans should hope their front office’s patient approach to the offseason continues regarding a potential Anthony Davis trade.

This trade is too much for Anthony Davis

Anthony Davis is still an elite player when he is healthy. He played just 20 games last season due to various injuries, but the season before that, he averaged 24.7 points, 11.6 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks. Those averages are spectacular.

The problem with Anthony Davis is the same issue that has plagued him his entire career: health. Over his last six seasons, he has averaged 46.5 games played per year. He will turn 34 before the end of next season. Players entering their mid-30s do not tend to get healthier.

Alperen Sengun has his flaws, but he is nine years younger than Anthony Davis and plays almost every game. He is also only 23 years old and still has plenty of time to address his shortcomings.

The Rockets should not feel the need to rush their young core

If Houston can find a trade for a veteran All-Star without sacrificing Sengun, Amen Thompson, or ideally Reed Sheppard, then they should absolutely pursue that potential deal. However, giving up Sengun or Thompson to chase a championship in the next couple of seasons would be irresponsible.

Kevin Durant is entering the twilight of his career, but Houston cannot give up on its young core to chase a championship with Durant. Although Durant still plays at an All-Star level, his play has slipped just enough that he is probably no longer in the “best player on a championship team” tier.

Giving up on Sengun, a player who could be part of a successful Rockets core for the next 10 years, is not the answer. Houston needs to find a different path, one that adds an impact player without sacrificing the future that makes this team so exciting.
