Rockets need to tread lightly with Steven Adams' health

Back on February 1st, 2024 when the Houston Rockets originally traded for Steven Adams, there was plenty to be happy about. He has been a fan favorite everywhere he has been and provides solid depth at the center position. However in the past two seasons, Adams has been active in only 97 games (seven of those being playoff games).

Adams is seen as a key piece in Houston and was framed as a big reason the Rockets struggled last season once he was confirmed out for the season in January. It is hard not to argue that he could have been good depth in the postseason down the stretch, but the team certainly had other issues to worry about. But looking at yesterday's 114-110 win against the Spurs has me wondering what the Rockets’ plan is for Adams this season.

Adams finally made his return to the court

In his regular-season debut Adams posted 4 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal in 9 minutes of play. Overall, a solid contribution considering the injury recovery and even age of Adams, who turned 33 in July. Right up until the start Adams was considered a game-time decision and was confirmed just in time for play.

This had me thinking about where Adams fits on the long-term plan for Houston; as he gets older does he still fit in with this younger unit? Of course having vets is important, and Adams has proven to be great at being a leader and voice on the bench. But a big need for Houston and any team is health, and Adams is constantly a question.

The Rockets' season goals could clash with Adams

In the games Adams played in 2025-26, his averages consisted of 5.8 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 1.5 assists. If he can keep up a pace like that while staying healthy this season he will 100% remain a part of the team. However if he continues to be a constant game-time decision with nagging calf issues, I think we could see Houston searching the market for center depth.

At the end of the day Houston is now 2-0 with two convincing wins against solid Texas teams. Next up is an away game in Atlanta and then a home game in Houston against Atlanta. This is a chance for Adams and the Rockets to continue their strong start against what should be a solid squad in the East.
