The Rockets’ young core is under pressure to deliver next season, but one of them could get a huge payday before then. Amen Thompson is in line for a potential extension before the season starts and sources are reporting it could be in the range of over $40 million per season. Houston can make a huge commitment by signing Thompson to a contract of that magnitude, while also avoiding the headache of restricted free agency.

Rockets fans should brace for sticker shock

Houston has rarely shelled out over $40 million to a player in a single season; only Kevin Durant and shockingly John Wall are in that prestigious club. But the NBA’s rising cap and Thompson’s burgeoning stardom will inevitably lead to a huge contract. If the Rockets don’t pay up now, it could cost them even more down the line.

Regardless of whoever else the Rockets may add or trade from their current team, Thompson figures to be a franchise cornerstone in the present and the future. He had tremendous two-way impact last season as the team’s best defender and de facto point guard. At just 23 years old, he should only continue to get better as he figures out how to weaponize his supreme athleticism.

Perhaps the most impressive thing about Thompson’s production so far in his young career is how he’s thrived without being in an ideal situation. He’s never been surrounded by strong shooters who can complement his slashing style, but has still made his impact felt offensively. And defensively he’s shown the ability to uplift his entire team no matter who else is on the court.

Thompson will live up to his big contract

At first glance, Thompson’s next contract will inevitably raise some eyebrows. But in the long run he will undoubtedly prove worthy of the dollar amount because of his high floor as a two-way player. Even if he doesn’t improve much more, he can make up the value of a big extension simply with his lockdown defense.

Combined with his relentless offensive aggression and surprising playmaking, Thompson should reach an All-Star level of play during his next contract. The Rockets front office is clearly high on him and would prefer to earn his loyalty with an early agreement on his extension rather than letting the negotiations ride into next summer.

Houston will get Thompson on a discount if they sign him now and he makes an All-Star or All-NBA Team next season. Even if the number might not look like a bargain, securing him on $40 million per season will be a great deal in the upcoming cap environment. And avoiding discontent from your young rising star is always a good thing too.
