As the Houston Rockets have begun the season 0-2, their infamous double-big lineup has looked largely ineffective on both ends of the floor: a major issue that the team will need to overcome if they have any hopes to utilize this weapon on a routine basis throughout the course of the season.
Moreover, Steven Adams, who will feature heavily in the Rockets' rotation this year, has looked to be easily fatigued through both of their games, compromising the viability of the zone defense they need to run when this line-up is on the court.
In the team's opener against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Adams played almost 37 minutes: a number that by no means will be sustainable throughout the course of the season.
The Rockets will need to figure out the right balance for Steven Adams this season
As Houston's double-big lineup became an increasingly viable tool toward the end of last season into the playoffs, Adams's role as backup center for the team began to take on more importance.
While he only averaged 13.7 minutes per game, his presence on the court alongside Alperen Sengun allowed the team to dominate the boards on both ends of the court, granting them extra possessions and enhancing the physical, defensive front the team put forth on a nightly basis.
However, with starting point guard Fred VanVleet likely out for the season, the team has gone to its massive line-up, with its shortest player being Amen Thompson at 6'7", in order to attempt to account for what they have sacrificed on the offensive end of the floor.
Yet, Adams, who has struggled with injuries throughout his career, cannot be expected to take on the burden that this line-up requires of him.
Although their first game went to double-OT, making Adams's heavy workload understandable, he still played 25 minutes in their matchup against the Detroit Pistons, with head coach Ime Udoka staggering him with Sengun in the second half.
While Adams is a good player and is certainly integral to the identity of this Rockets team, things will quickly become disastrous if he is relied upon to be a minutes-eater for the team.
The organization presumably signed Clint Capela this offseason for this exact reason, and they must enhance his role in order to account for any shortcomings that Adams might bring to the table.
As much as they, understandably, want to run the double-big lineup as much as possible, the team must take into account what they are asking of Adams, and they must limit his minutes as the season progresses in order to maintain his effectiveness and health.
