Houston Rockets Training Camp Video Diary – Day 3

facebooktwitterreddit

Heading into day 3 of Houston Rockets training camp news on the court was over shadowed by the truckload of adidas shoes delivered to  James Harden. Starting today (October 1st, 2015) Harden will lace up adidas for the next 13 years as he becomes a key spokesman for the brand.

On the court we get interviews from head coach Kevin McHale as well as Harden and Patrick Beverley:

More from Rockets News

Kevin McHale:

  • Updates management has decided to not run 2-a-days this season given Dwight Howard and several other players (Beverley) returning from injury last season.
  • Speaks to how many young front court guys they have at camp with only Howard and Clint Capela having any NBA experience
  • Terrence Jones did not practice due to bruised ribs with no indication on how long he’ll sit out
  • McHale indicated Patrick Beverley looks hand looks good including his shot as he recovers from his ligament injury
  • Asked if he has determined who’ll play in the first preseason game this coming Tuesday (October 6th) McHale says he won’t decide that until 5:00PM that day.

James Harden:

  • With today being the launch of his contract with adidas much of the post practice interview focused on this subject.
  • Harden also mentioned how grateful he is to the Rockets and his personal fans.
  • Harden drew a comparison between the shoe brand and the Houston Rockets as they both showed how much they wanted ‘The beard’ to be a part of their organization.
  • He elaborated saying he has a unique voice in the NBA and will handle his endorsement the same way he did with the Rockets observing the company and when he’s ready to provide input he will.
  • For now he’ll wear the Crazylight Boost 2015 model and says he’ll adapt to them via training camp and preseason. For those wondering about this last statement, I would imagine it’s like a female who wears heels; wedges are very different from stilettos in terms of how you walk. Given Harden’s prowess on the court I’m guessing he means varying brands/models offer the same issues in terms of their differences.

Patrick Beverley:

  • Beverley opined on meeting the UFC athletes following practice and correlated how he approaches the game being somewhat similar to an UFC athlete given his fighter mentality.
  • He speaks to his love of competition and the grind and notes the differences between and Ty Lawson will end up being an advantage though he is using training camp to build on court chemistry (reading between the lines on the later comment).
  • Beverley reiterated the common themes of media day and training camp that he feels this team is scary top to bottom, are cumulatively focused on winning and are about team first.

The big take away from day 3 of camp is McHale’s decision to not run two-a-day practices this year and his focus on front court players. With McHale citing so many youngsters up front it does beg the question if he’s looking to give Montrezl Harrell some run at center despite his lack of size or if Jeremy Tyler or Joshua Smith are legitimate roster considerations for the 15th spot.
