As the Houston Rockets continue their Round 1, NBA Playoff series versus the Warriors it’s become abundantly clear signing a new head coach is a summer priority.

Let’s face it J.B. Bickerstaff may be a nice guy and an adequate assistant coach, but he’s just not ready to tackle a head coaching job. As Space City Scoop has covered repeatedly Bickerstaff’s most egregious decisions are his rotation selections. Like his team he is inconsistent in terms of how he utilizes his players with constant shifts to the starting rotation. Any successful team has specific roles and assignments for their players and a great head coach makes sure to be consistent in their minute allocation. When a player doesn’t get consistent playing time they tend to force their game when on court thinking they need to be demonstrative in their production.

Though the Rockets haven’t indicated they will replace Bickerstaff (I mean they are still playing in the post season) there has been ample speculation and rumors suggesting it’s a forgone conclusion (let’s face it … it is!).

Two of those coaches rumored as a potential replacement were Scott Brooks and Tom Thibodeau. Well scratch them both off your list as Thibs has signed on to coach (and President of Basketball Operations) the young talented Minnesota Timberwolves.

Further Shaun Powell of nba.com is reporting Scott Brooks will likely be headed to Washington to replace the recently released Randy Whitman. This move is rather telling, in that it’s long been rumored Kevin Durant may have interest in returning to where he grew up (Maryland suburbs). Given the long relationship Brooks had with Durant, I’m sure this effected the Wizard’s decision.

As for the Houston Rockets, Jeff Van Gundy remains a rumored possibility and perhaps we’ll start hearing Mark Jackson’s name getting thrown in the mix now that the Wizards and T-Wolves have filled their head coach openings.
