The Houston Rockets are expecting big things from Amen Thompson. If he lives up to those expectations, he could have the honor of being part of Team USA in 2028.

It's a stamp of approval. Being part of Team USA means being part of basketball history. Some of the best players to ever lace 'em up earned the distinction.

Zach Lowe and Bill Simmons both expect Thompson to become part of that lineage.

Rockets' Amen Thompson named as future Olympian

"Amen Thompson is going to the Olympics in 2028...can you imagine what this guy is going to be doing in 2028?"

- Zach Lowe

Simmons was quick to concur with his colleague on The Zach Lowe Show.

This should come as no surprise. Lowe goes on to detail Thompson's versatility. His ability to guard across positions and create chaos is already elite, so where will he be in 2028?

It's an exciting prospect for Rockets fans. They already get to watch Alperen Sengun in international competition, and will for years to come. Still, for fans specifically in Houston, there could be some extra meaning in watching a Rocket in the red, white, and blue.

That said, making Team USA is no small feat. Thompson has boundless potential, but his poor jump shooting continues to be a concern.

Can he really contribute at such a high level without a three-pointer?

Rockets' Amen Thompson is going to be a stud

Yes.

At the risk of beating a dead horse, yes, it would be beneficial if Thompson developed a consistent three-ball. Nobody's expecting him to morph into Steph Curry, but if he could approach league-average accuracy on low volume, it would change his game.

That said, Thompson is already among the best perimeter defenders in the NBA. He's special on that end of the floor. Thompson's ability to guard multiple positions and leverage his special athleticism to make plays others can't, at times appearing other-worldly.

By 2028, his instincts will be honed. Thompson will be even more dominant. He won't lead Team USA in scoring. That's fine. There will be no shortage of American players who want to take that role. Thompson should be able to distinguish himself with his scoring ability.

If he's not the best American defender in the world, he'll be right there with Cooper Flagg. That should be enough to earn him a spot on Team USA. Rockets fans should look forward to seeing Thompson in international competition by 2028:

As well as other big things from the promising young forward.
