Inevitable Amen Thompson reality is starting to set in for Rockets fans

His next contract will be an expensive one.

The Rockets could have a busy offseason with potential trade targets galore, but arguably the most important piece of business is Amen Thompson’s contract extension. That extension could come with some sticker shock for Rockets fans: he’s likely to sign a 5-year extension worth around $200 million after a solid season and continued growth trajectory.

Amen Thompson has earned a huge contract

Even though Thompson was snubbed from an All-Defense selection this season, we can’t forget that he made First Team All-Defense in just his second season last year. His defensive ceiling is sky-high and extends beyond the traditional role of a wing stopper. But Thompson’s true worth comes from combining his defense with a constantly improving offensive game.

This season, he embraced a bigger offensive role and averaged 18 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists per game. Without a true point guard for most of the season, Thompson took on the role of floor general and often led the offense. He displayed tremendous growth creating his own shot and even expanding his scoring skillset to sprinkle in midrange jumpers.

The Rockets may be looking to add star talent from elsewhere to build a contender now, but their future outlook depends largely on securing Thompson. Alongside Alperen Sengun, he is a core pillar of the Rockets' young core. All around the league, young stars of Thompson's caliber will be signing huge contract extensions this summer - and he should be no exception.

The Rockets need to secure their future

Thompson has shown a clear ability to continue progressing his offensive game, especially if he's not overtasked. Combining that theoretical offense with the incredible defense he's already shown leads to one of the best players in the NBA, even without much outside shooting. That incredible potential, along with his high floor from his defensive production, makes a seemingly jaw-dropping deal worth every penny.

Houston is hoping that Thompson can continue his progression and combine the best of his abilities on both sides of the ball. It'll be up to the front office to surround him with supporting players that can maximize his talents, even with the financial limitations caused by Thompson's next deal.

There is some possibility that the Rockets will negotiate a hard line with Thompson. After all, they got a great deal with Sengun on his extension two summers ago. But the Rockets are in a more competitive position now, and must know that keeping Thompson happy will be important to their success next season. One of the Rockets' best moves for immediate success could be quickly securing Thompson on a contract extension this summer that satisfies both him and the team.
