Kevin Durant's future with the Rockets is still uncertain and depends on whether or not he wants to extend with the team. So far, the Rockets are giving him every reason to do so by playing like a top team and evolving young stars right before our eyes. If Durant is concerned about being somewhere that he can compete for a title, he doesn't have many better options than the Rockets.

Durant is already in a perfect position

Although he is a star player and an all-time great, Durant is not necessarily a well-rounded talent. He's one of the best in the world at scoring the ball, especially on jumpers, but he needs teammates to make up for his weaknesses. Thankfully the Rockets have all of the right supporting cast to make up for Durant's deficiencies and make him look better.

Durant's offensive weaknesses are clearest in his lack of physicality and mediocre playmaking. But the Rockets make up the difference in these categories with his young star teammates, namely Amen Thompson and Alperen Sengun. Both of these players are known for their toughness inside the paint and exceptional playmaking at their positions.

Between them and point guard Fred VanVleet, Durant doesn't have to worry too much about initiating plays himself unless he has a clear advantage to attack. The Rockets are letting him focus on his scoring arsenal while doing more to get him comfortable. Everyone else can support the rim onslaught and distribution duties, while Durant can be the star scorer the Rockets wanted.

Even Durant's defense isn't a problem in Houston

At his age, Durant can be a defensive liability in the wrong system. Fortunately, the Rockets have the right system to mask his weaknesses. They have multiple chaotic wing defenders to recover if Durant makes a defensive error. With both the point of attack and primary rim protection covered by his teammates, Durant can play his ideal defensive role as a rebounder and help-side defender.

There are very few other teams in the NBA where Durant can still play his preferred role on both sides of the ball. For this season, that number can be considered zero, since any team trading for Durant would have to give up some major asset and hurt their depth.

The Rockets might not have the same top-end offensive talent as some other contenders, but that's where Durant can be the hero. When the going gets toughest, he'll have a chance to add towards his legacy by hitting clutch shots for thde Rockets in the playoffs. And his teammates will help keep it a close game on both ends until it's his turn to take over.
