The 1 player on the Rockets' Summer League roster who must receive a two-way deal
The Houston Rockets were on quite a Summer League roll. Last night, that roll came to a screeching halt.
An 87-73 loss to the Pistons stings. Yes, we know - this is Summer League. This game does not reflect on - well, much of anything.
It was still a difficult watch.
Reed Sheppard struggled. The Pistons keyed in on him like Steph Curry, sending double (and even triple) teams at him early in the clock. Sheppard still contributed, but his 6/17 shooting from the field reflected his inexperience in facing those coverages.
He still fared better than Cam Whitmore. His 1/15 shooting from the field was downright ugly. Without getting major contributions from either of those two, this Summer League roster isn't likely to generate a win.
Yet, even amidst this chaos, one player was able to shine.
The Rockets should reward Orlando Robinson for his efforts.
Houston Rockets have an intriguing big man on their hands
Granted, Robinson wasn't dominant last night. He was merely solid, finishing with 13 points on 5/11 shooting from the field and 2/3 shooting from long-range to go with 8 rebounds and 3 assists.
That's almost the point. Robinson has skills that will allow him to settle into a complementary role. His ability to space the floor should make him an easy addition to any lineup.
So will his ability to defend in space. We know Ime Udoka likes big men who can defend at the level. Last night, Robinson was trapping and hedging on pick-and-rolls with consistent success on the defensive end.
His passing also pops. Robinson can make passes through thin lanes out of the high post. He may never be a self-creator, but those stationary passing chops will still be useful at any level of basketball. A big man who can pass adds a wrinkle to any offense.
Can the Rockets make room for Robinson?
Houston Rockets should find room for Robinson
It won't be easy.
The Rockets just granted their last roster spot to Jack McVeigh. As it stands, they've got no room for Robinson.
Here's a solution - make room. Robinson has outperformed N'Faly Dante at every turn throughout Summer League. Cutting him to create a spot for Robinson is one option.
It feels wrong to advocate against Dante. He's a young man with promise. Yet - so is Robinson. He hasn't seen a lot of opportunity in the NBA, but he clearly has some meaningful skills. The Rockets have him in their grasp, and they shouldn't let him go.
Even if he couldn't help them get a win over the Pistons last night.
