The Houston Rockets are one of the most storied franchises in the NBA. Throughout the years, they’ve treated hoops fans in Space City to a litany of unforgettable moments. That said, they’re not the only historic basketball team from Houston:

Arguably, they’re not even the most successful.

The Houston Comets won the first four WNBA championships between 1997 and 2000. They were the league's first dynasty, led by Sheryl Swoops, Cynthia Cooper and Tina Thompson.

So, they were inarguably more successful than the Rockets, weren’t they? Unfortunately, the Comets were dissolved in 2008. If the Rockets have a case as Houston’s basketball team, it’s rooted in their longevity.

Soon, the Comets may be able to close that gap. Rockets owner Tillman Fertitta seems to be set on bringing the Comets back to Houston. In fact, he's made a bit to do exactly that.

Houston deserves a WNBA team

You may be asking yourself a valid question. If the Comets won the WNBA’s first four championships, how could they have folded?

It speaks to the WNBA’s (lack of) popularity - until recently. With the emergence of Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, women’s basketball has exploded.

Rightfully so. The talent on display in the women’s game has reached new heights. A’ja Wilson is having one of the strongest individual seasons in league history. Paige Bueckers and Kiki Iriafen are around the corner. Women’s basketball is thriving, and Fertitta is smart to get in on the action.

Moreover, WNBA already has plans to expand, with new franchises coming to Portland and Toronto. So why not Houston? Why not return to the home of one of the greatest WNBA teams ever?

Well, the Comets’ return is far from certain. Fertitta will have competition from Denver, Nashville, Philadelphia and Miami. It seems like everyone wants to get involved with the WNBA’s boom.

We’ll make a case for Houston.

Fertitta already has an arena. He already has experience with owning a basketball team. More importantly, the Comets are among the most celebrated teams in WNBA history.

It’s time to bring them back.
