As Houston Rockets fans got an up-close-and personal glimpse at their new star, Kevin Durant, in Netflix's new season of Starting 5, they got the pleasure of getting an inside look at one of the NBA's greatest players' mindset and approach to the game and the end of his career.

Moreover, while Durant was on the Phoenix Suns for most of last season, the series did feature his trade to Houston, and, given Durant's comments on his hopes for his tenure with the Rockets, fans have ample reason to be excited for his arrival.

"The perfect world, we win a couple of championships, I get my jersey retired here. Just live and be a part of the community there and be a part of the organization."

Kevin Durant is ready to make his mark on the Rockets

Over the course of his remarkable, 17-season career, Durant has become one of the most legendary players in NBA history. Even last season, at age 36, Durant averaged 26.6 points, six rebounds and 4.2 assists while shooting 43% from the 3-point line and earning his 15th nod to the All-Star Game.

Yet, last season with Phoenix, things went south yet again for Durant. After a promising couple of seasons, the team's offense fell apart, and the Suns finished the season with a 36-46 record, missing the play-in entirely.

Therefore, when the organization decided to move on from Durant, the one year remaining on his contract granted him ample leverage to determine his next destination.

With the young core the Rockets have, it was clear last season that all they were missing was a reliable presence in their half-court offense to elevate them into title contention, and Durant, even as he nears the end of his career, represents exactly that.

Now that Durant has signed a two-year, $90 million extension with the team, this reality now has the chance to come to fruition.

Yet, up until now, there still remained a certain amount of anxiety surrounding the fact that Durant was only under contract until the end of the 2025-26 season. Given the fact that Houston gave up two starters in Dillon Brooks and Jalen Green, along with a first-round pick, to acquire Durant, him leaving after just one season would be an unmitigated failure for the organization.

Nevertheless, although players always say optimistic things when they first get traded, everything indicates that Durant hopes to finish out his career in Houston.

While it remains to be seen what the Rockets' ceiling is with Durant on the roster, he has the ability to elevate this team to heights they have not seen in a long time, and, if he is able to bring a championship to H-Town, it could represent a whole new layer to his legacy in the NBA.
