Rockets get gutted for the foreseeable future in Jaylen Brown trade proposal

This is too much to give up for Jaylen Brown.

The Rockets could be in the market to trade for a star this summer, and Jaylen Brown has come up in plenty of rumors after the Celtics' playoff disappointment. Naturally this led Bleacher Report to make a mock trade proposal where Brown ends up in Houston as part of a four-team deal. However, the total package from the Rockets would be devastating to the team in the near future.

In total, Houston would give up Fred VanVleet, Jabari Smith Jr, this year's No. 39 pick and THREE future first-round picks to get back Brown and Marcus Sasser from the Pistons. This would be a massive offer from the Rockets and Brown is probably not good enough to justify giving up so many assets. Making such a trade could quickly end up biting the Rockets for years to come.

The Rockets can't get too desperate in the trade market

There may be some ideal trade candidates available for the Rockets this summer, but giving away the farm will only lead to more problems down the line. If the Rockets were to give up so many picks along with a key young player and their projected starting point guard, they better be sure that the guy coming back will make them a title contender right away.

And quite frankly, Brown hasn't shown enough to be in that conversation. Although he had his best season to date and finished on the All-NBA Second Team, Brown had poor impact metrics all year long. Both in the regular season and playoffs, the Celtics performed better with Brown off the court.

Impact metrics aren't the only standard of a player's worth and Brown could be hurt in that category by a strong Celtics bench. But still, it likely proves that Brown isn't worth multiple picks and two other good assets. The best teams in today's NBA are built through good asset management, and the Rockets need to follow that example if they want to become a proper contender.

VanVleet and Smith Jr would be massive losses

If the Rockets traded away VanVleet, they would be left without any proper point guard on the roster. We already saw the disastrous effects of that setup this season and don't need to relive it. Trading away pick 39 would also relinquish Houston's simplest path to another point guard.

The Rockets definitely don't have a strong enough offensive ecosystem to sustain losing VanVleet and their best picks for multiple upcoming drafts. Even with Durant and Brown both on the roster, they would still need a floor general to organize the offense. All in all, this mock trade is a disaster waiting to happen.
