As the Houston Rockets have attempted to sort out their rotation combinations in the absence of starting point guard Fred VanVleet, the double-big lineup has, unfortunately, not been as effective as many thought it would be when it has been utilized in the starting lineup.
However, that does not mean that it has lost its monstrous advantage on the glass, and, as Steven Adams has averaged an absurd 15.8 rebounds per 36 minutes this season, the combination of him and Alperen Sengun has remained one of the Rockets' most tantalizing weapons.
Steven Adams may be the most important rebounder in the league
NBA Analyst Zach Lowe, on the recent episode of his podcast, is hugely excited about the continued dominance of this combination as well:
"I feel like I am watching a scientific experiment... With Sengun and Adams on the floor together, they are +37 in 70 minutes. This continues to be the greatest accidental discovery in recent basketball history."Zach Lowe on The Zach Lowe Show
Therefore, although head coach Ime Udoka has decided to go smaller with his starting lineup, giving Josh Okogie the nod in the backcourt, Adams still has an increasingly important role to play on this team, and his continued dominance will be massive for their ability to keep the double-big lineup in play.
In the absence of a bona-fide offensive facilitator, the team has somewhat struggled to find spacing and move the ball effectively throughout their first four games this season.
Yet, in a 139-121 victory over the Toronto Raptors earlier this week, they still managed to come together offensively, in large part because they absolutely dominated the rebounding battle: 53-22.
Moreover, Houston is first in the league in offensive rebounding percentage with an astounding 42.9%.
As long as this team is still trying to find its footing offensively, their ability to dominate the glass and win battles in the paint will be indispensable. Even when players such as Jabari Smith Jr. or Amen Thompson might have slow shooting nights, the team can then lean more heavily upon their size, including the versatility that Clint Capela presents to their rotation, in order to bully opposing teams when needed.
If Adams can stay healthy, therefore, what once was the team's secret weapon could continue to be their greatest strength in the right moments, even if it's not something that Udoka can go to at all times.
