The Houston Rockets may have completed one of the best signings of the offseason. Tari Eason has agreed to sign a five-year, $81.5 million contract.
Eason is not a perfect player. He has dealt with injuries throughout his career, and his three-point shot is still fairly inconsistent. He does, however, play with infectious defensive energy and continues to develop his offensive game. If he can simply stay healthy, this will be a valuable signing for Houston.
Tari Eason can make a major impact on a winning team
Tari Eason projects to be a fifth starter or high-level bench player on a contending team. That is not a knock on his game, it speaks to his play style. He is capable of taking on the opposing team’s best offensive perimeter player while being a low-usage offensive player who can still put up double-digit points.
Players in that mold are exactly what championship teams need. OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges filled similar roles on the 2026 New York Knicks, Lu Dort filled that role on the 2025 Oklahoma City Thunder, and Jrue Holiday filled that role on the 2024 Boston Celtics. The examples go on and on.
Eason is not at those players’ level yet, but he fits the same broad archetype. He shot a blistering 46.0% from three-point range before the All-Star break last year and played his usual high-energy defense. He went ice cold after the All-Star break, but if he is able to emulate his pre-All-Star break form, then Eason will become a dangerous role player.
Houston’s front office did well in this negotiation
Another thing to note is how fast Houston was able to get this deal done. Other notable restricted free agents like Jalen Duren, Peyton Watson, and Bennedict Mathurin are still negotiating with their respective teams.
Signing Eason earlier in the offseason allows Houston to better prepare for the season, knowing its core for the upcoming year.
We will see how this signing looks in a couple of seasons, but right now, it already looks like a spectacular signing. If Eason stays healthy and proves his jumper is real, then this signing could look even better.
