Undeniable Rockets truth should terrify or delight Houston fans

The Rockets are known for being aggressive in the trade market.

The Rockets have a history of making big offseason moves, and this summer is likely bring more of the same. Whether it's a massive Kevin Durant trade or something else, the Rockets could completely alter their trajectory in one fell swoop - a proposition both nerve-wracking and incredibly exciting. After this season's playoff disappointment, it's clear that major moves are needed to establish Houston as a true contender, but those same moves also have franchise-ruining potential.

The Rockets have some huge decisions coming up

After a flashy offseason last year, the Rockets surprisingly stayed pat at the most recent trade deadline - and it came back to haunt them. Houston is unlikely to make that same mistake twice in a row, so we can expect some trade fireworks coming up soon. The Rockets face major questions about pretty much every member of their roster and even their head coach.

No Rocket can be considered untouchable in trade talks, and the front office may even prefer to trade away some of their best players to avoid long-term issues. The case of Durant's timeline being vastly different from the younger Rockets is well-publicized, but this could also sneakily be a pivotal summer for decisions on the young core.

The playoffs exposed the fit problems still prevalent on the Rockets' roster. Stars Alperen Sengun and Amen Thompson often crowd the paint for each other, but both are currently seen as building blocks for Houston going forward. This may be the last chance for the Rockets to trade either and get maximum value out of them.

A big move comes with major risks too

The Rockets could choose to move on from either Sengun or Thompson in favor of parts that fit the other better. But that decision could backfire on them if they trade for the wrong return. Even if a fit may appear better on paper, it's not always guaranteed to work out in reality.

Plenty of trades have disappointed with their on-court production because of unexpected chemistry issues or unforeseen circumstances. By being such an active offseason team, the Rockets must accept the possibility of a trade disaster whenever they make a substantial move.

But at least the Rockets are giving themselves a chance to succeed and address their weaknesses. The price of indecision can also weigh heavy on obviously flawed teams, but the Rockets should be able to avoid that pitfall after their playoff embarassment. Now we can only sit back and hope that the Rockets' upcoming moves are the right ones and not a path to disaster that the team will regret for years to come.
