The Houston Rockets are a fearsome team.
That hasn't always been the case. It would be nice to say they're getting the respect they deserve, but let's be honest:
For a few years, the Rockets deserved less respect than Rodney Dangerfield.
The team was "tanking". Perhaps the Rockets were the target of some excessive criticism. Tanking is a viable team-building strategy - as the Rockets are now proving.
Still, it would be a stretch to say that they'd earned anyone's respect. So when the Rockets signed Fred VanVleet, and recording artist Drake referred to them as the Guandong Dragons, it was hard to argue.
Now, it's time to clap back.
Rockets commentator takes hilarious jab at famous rapper
Yikes.
Has Drake not suffered enough in 2024? He took an emphatic loss to Kendrick Lamar. Now, he's suffering the wrath of Craig Ackerman.
That said, Ackerman has been through it all with the Rockets. He dutifully called Rockets games for three years when the team had a vested interest in losing. He's earned his right to crack jokes.
Besides, the Raptors are now in the same place the Rockets were in. They're tanking. This is an organization that's crossing their fingers for lottery luck this summer. If the Raptors land Cooper Flagg (or even Dylan Harper), they'll quickly forget Ackerman's dig.
Some users on X may not forget it for a while.
X users revel in Rockets win
Fair. When it comes to Rockets play-by-play guys, Ackerman be truly be the greatest of all time. If there was any question, he solidified his legacy last night.
Ackerman does know ball. This was an uncharacteristic moment for the long-time Rockets commentator. Ackerman usually keeps his commentary to on-court action. It seems he couldn't resist this one.
I love it too, Frank.
I love that Space City Network loves it. This was a moment for the community.
Was it well-deserved?
Rockets fans have earned this moment
It does feel like the Rockets took some undue criticism for tanking.
It's understandable. This team intentionally lost games for three straight years. People don't like that. They think the practice of tanking undermines the competitive nature of professional sports. Moreover, the Rockets underwent the most shameless tank job since the "Process" 76ers.
Yet, look at the league today. The Raptors are tanking. They're joined by the Wizards and the Jazz. Somehow, it feels like they aren't subject to the same vitriol.
Perhaps the Rockets walked so those teams could run. It could also be that they've provided the league with some proof of concept. The Rockets are 19-9 despite losing intentionally for several years. They deserve this moment in the sun:
Sorry, Drake.
